On May 25, 2007, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty signed into law the Next Generation Energy Act.

Among other provisions, this legislation:

  • Establishes a goal for all Minnesota electric utilities to save the equivalent of 1.5 percent of their annual, average energy sales through energy efficiency and energy conservation program participation starting in 2010.
  • Requires Minnesota utilities to have 25 percent of their energy produced from a renewable resource by 2025

Why?

The legislature announced that continued growth in demand for energy will significantly impact the state.

It's in everyone's interest to:

  • Reduce energy consumption
  • Develop and use renewable energy resources wherever possible
  • Create effective energy forecasting, planning, and education programs
